THE REHBERGER-WEG

The Rehberger-Weg, which is around five kilometers long, links two countries, two municipalities, two cultural institutions – and countless stories. The path runs between Weil am Rhein and Riehen, between the Fondation Beyeler and the Vitra  Campus. Guided by «24 Stops», 24 waymarkers created by the artist Tobias Rehberger, walkers can explore a uniquely diverse natural and cultural landscape. The Rehberger-Weg and its waymarkers therefore provide an opportunity to get to know both the history and stories of the surroundings and its inhabitants and to tell them again, as well as encouraging an excursion into nature. 

The Fondation Beyeler, the municipality of Riehen, Vitra, and the town of Weil am Rhein are jointly responsible for the idea’s development and implementation.

The idea of a cross-border path was initiated within the framework of IBA Basel 2020. The Swiss watch company Swatch is generously supporting the project as the Presenting Partner and funded the production of the objects that demarcate the path. The first 12 waymarkers were installed in September 2015. Since June 2016, "24 Stops" can be enjoyed with all 24 waymarkers in place.

Evening tour with a night swimming session

28 June, 8–11 p.m., Vitra Design Museum | This night-time excursion is set to provide you with fascinating insights into the “24 Stops” along the Rehberger-Weg trail. After all, your guide for this tour is Tobias Rehberger, the artist who created the 24 milestones. And who better than him to explain the individual works and their respective scenic context. The tour will conclude with a visit to the natural swimming pool in Riehen, where you can enjoy the cooling waters and marvel at the unique beauty of the location by night. Cost: EUR 12 per person plus entrance fee to the Naturbad Riehen This event must be booked in advance. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring swimwear. The tour will take place in all weather conditions. Because the tour will take you across national borders, we ask you to carry identification documents with you. The tour includes a shuttle journey back to the starting point at 11:00 pm.

Guided walk

Price: CHF 12.- / EUR 12.- per person The price includes a shuttle bus back to the starting point. The walks take place whatever the weather. Advance registration is required. During the walks the national border is crossed. Please carry an identity card and wear sturdy shoes.

Full moon tour

18 September, 6.45–8.45 p.m., Vitra Design Museum | Hiking along the Rehberger-Weg trail under the light of a full moon is something quite special. Beginning at the Vitra Campus, this night-time tour will take you over Tüllinger Mountain and down to the natural swimming pool in Riehen. As you walk, Sabine Theil will provide you with interesting facts on the Rehberger-Wegmarken milestones that you pass. The natural landscape will seem quite different at night, as will the view of the border triangle with its fascinating illuminations. The tour will therefore touch on topics such as light and architecture at night and include stories about full moons and man’s quest to get to the moon. Cost: EUR 12 per person This event must be booked in advance. Sturdy shoes are a must. The tour will take place in all weather conditions. Because the tour will take you across national borders, we ask you to carry identification documents with you. The tour includes a shuttle journey back to the starting point.

Expert tour

22 September, 4–6 p.m., Vitra Design Museum | We will set out together along Rehberger-Weg, passing gardens, fruit fields and meadow orchards, and traversing the enchanting vineyard landscape on Tüllinger Berg and, in parts, the historical old village of Weil. Not only will you enjoy magnificent views of Basel, the Jura region, the Vosges mountains and Weil am Rhein, but also gain fascinating insights into the area. After all, your «24 Stops» tour is packed with anecdotes and history about Weil am Rhein and its surroundings. The tour includes a shuttle journey back to the starting point. Because the tour will take you across national borders, we ask you to carry identification documents with you. Price: EUR 12.- per person The fee must be paid to the guide before the tour starts. The walks take place in all weathers. Advance registration is required. Sturdy shoes are a must.

Tour and wine-tasting session

20 October, 2–5 p.m., from the car park opposite Naturbad Riehen (CH) | While walking along the Rehberger Trail through the vines, you will learn interesting facts about the Rehberger Trail markers and about the history of viticulture, the wine, the work in the vineyard, the special features of the Schlipf on the Tüllinger Berg and also about the impressive and diverse landscape. With a bit of luck, you can watch the winegrowers during the harvest. Finally, you can taste the wine grown here at a small wine tasting in the vineyard and fortify yourself with Gugelhupf. After the tasting, Sabine Theil will accompany you to the bus stop Läublinpark, from where you can take bus line 6 or 16 back to Riehen to the natural swimming pool. In case of heavy rain, the tasting will take place at the Röschard winery. Cost: 35 EUR per person incl. wine tasting with 3 wines. Sturdy shoes required. The tour takes place in all weathers. Please bring your passport as you will be crossing the border. Participation is only possible after registration.
